The History of Aristakes Lastivertsi
Twenty-five chapters and the author's own closing discourse, translated from the Classical
Armenian of Yuzbashyan's 1963 critical edition and verified against its page images, with 498
back-of-book notes on textual cruxes, scripture, names, dates, and terms left untranslated.
Aristakes Lastivertsi wrote in the generation that watched the Armenian kingdoms pass to
Byzantium and then fall to the Seljuk Turks. He is a contemporary witness: he saw the
consequences of the annexation of Ani, he records the sack of Arcn in 1049 at length, and he
carries the account through to the capture of the emperor Romanos Diogenes in 1071. He also
wrote the fullest surviving account of the Tondrakian movement.
He is not a detached observer. He believes the catastrophe is punishment for sin, he says
so repeatedly, and his invective against Greeks, Turks, courtiers, and heretics is unsparing.
None of that is softened here. His dates, his numbers, his errors, and his anger stand as he
wrote them, and where his text is genuinely uncertain the notes say so rather than guess.
Review status. This edition has not undergone independent
Armenian-language review, philological review, or external scholarly peer review, and should
not be cited as though it had. It rests on a documented source-first process: every unit
verified character by character against the 1963 page images before drafting, production QA,
a blind independent audit, comparator collation with no rendering adopted, a whole-work
terminology audit, and a final Armenian-to-English coverage audit over printed pp. 21–145.
Readers needing certainty on a particular reading should consult the 1963 edition itself.
